Arkansas Whetstone

These are probably the finest whetstone sharpening products you can buy. Four hundred million years ago in a small geographical region of Central Arkansas, now part of the Ouachita Mountains a sedimentary rock formation composed of micro crystalline quartz called Novaculite was formed. The word  Novaculite comes from the Latin word ‘novacula’ meaning razor stone. Novaculite is a re-crystallized variety of chert. It is the stone from which these whetstone products are made.

Black Novaculte is the finest grade. Stone described as ‘Arkansas type’ are not genuine Arkansas. Other grades of Arkansas stone are all useful for specific tasks. The  stones described as soft are useful for a preliminary sharpening of blades which have some degree of wear. Hard stones are useful for all round sharpening but  black are best of all. Arkansas stones sometimes described as hard stones are not the scarce black stones.

View our care of knives page which will give you some tips on how to proceed.

Our black Arkansas stones are 6 inches x 2 inches and come in a handmade wooden box. These Arkansas black stones are not only used for sharpening knives they were traditionally used to sharpen items which require a fine edge and in the box are instructions for their use. They should always be used with a honing oil or a quality mineral oil. We also have some smaller stones in two grades hard and soft. These come in a leather sheath and are  intended to be carried by fisherman, campers etc for sharpening knives in the field. Always practice your knife sharpening skills on your less valuable items and use protective clothing especially gloves. The  Arkansas hard stones are idea for sharpening a wide range of tools and are used worldwide by woodworkers and others desiring a perfect edge.

Have a look at our quite unique razors. Made utilising 18th century oak these along with the certificate which accompanies them are very nice prestige items. You will not find these products anywhere else and they are made for us by craftsmen using our wood. It’s a long chase finding our wood and some of it like the HMS Victory oak is from our diminishing never to be replenished supply. Take advantage of it whilst we have it and whilst our aging craftsmen who possess the necessary skills to work it are still around.
