Trevor Ablett in his sixties works as hard today producing his Sheffield knives as he ever did and still works a six day week in his workshop producing items in much the same was as he did when he started his career. Until Trevor Ablett appeared on Michael Portillo’s television programme Great Railway Journeys his work had gone unnoticed but now his knives are very much in demand but we do have a few on our web site. If you have seen Ray Myers and his Bushcraft survival knives on television you can also see that range of bush knives on our web site. We also have a range of Sheffield knives for the yachtsman. Many of the knives come with handles made from stags horn and buffalo horn and in a wide variety of different blade types which are based on traditional types such as lambsfoot, pruners, castrators, clip point, spear and so on. Some of the knife shapes are derived from long forgotten patterns like the serpentine Ettrick shape which may have originated in the Scottish town of that name. All of them are hand made by craftsmen from Sheffield who still produce the finest knives of their kind available and when you purchase them you can be sure that you are buying British made knives and in most cases from knife makers whose families have produced Sheffield knives for generation after generation for several hundred years. These Sheffield knives are items which can not only be used but have been produced with pride and can be treasured for many years and in the case of knives made with buffalo or stag handles each one in it’s own way is unique in that patterns especially in the buffalo are different in each knife. So whether you are a knife collector or a connoisseur of artisan made quality products or want to use these Sheffield knives have a look at our web site. Look at our scissors if you are involved in making paper craft items, greeting cards, and dressmaking. The semi independent tradesmen in the Sheffield cutlery and knife making industry were known as littlemesters of Sheffield and in the days when Sheffield was booming as a world centre for those products each craftsman would perform just one small part of the process of making a knife or scissors but now the last survivors will make the whole product. The Scottish knives including the dirks are authentic items made by the same Company which made them when they were more than just for ceremonial use. You are not buying a cheap copy of these traditional products you are buying the real thing. Our Sheffield knives are post free within the UK and we ship our British blades worldwide. Very few of the old craftsmen still producing knives in the traditional ways are left and we have found a few and they are on our web site. Each knife is handmade and so all are slightly different. Buying fine blades is a pleasure and indeed the word culture is related to the Latin word for knife, cultr-, cultri- so whether you are a knife collector looking for the finest blades polished to perfection or a utilitarian object for use in you garden or elsewhere have a look. You need not buy foreign blades they are still being made at home here in Sheffield. These days you will have few opportunities to buy fine artisan made British products but these items give you that opportunity - at least for the time being. Each blade is made to a traditional pattern dating from a time when carrying a pocket knife was a natural thing to do and these British made knives are more than the equal and have a longer pedigree than many revered continental makers.

Sheffield was not so long ago a place of large scale industry. Double decker buses thronged the streets loaded with workers going to the steel mills and cutlery factories. Foggy days meant children were frequently sent home from school early. Steam trains crossed the streets and the the whole town had an air of purpose you will not see today. Indeed most of the manufacturing towns of Northern England were much the same. By the 14th century Sheffield was noted for the production of knives, and by 1600 it had become the main centre of cutlery production in England. In the 1740s the crucible steel process was improved by a Sheffield resident allowing a much better production quality. At about the same time, the silver plating process was discovered. Today these crafts are still in operation but on a much reduced scale. The excellence of there inherited skills are the equal of European producers and in truth their knives are a bargain given the pride, effort and skill with which they are produced.
